Aarhus, the City of Smiles as the Danes call it, is getting a snow park the whole month of December. Already from the 28th of November, people of Aarhus will have the possibility to make skiing a daily thing.
The location of the snow park will be in the middle of the city, between Aros (remember Wes Lang’s The Studio?) and Musikhuset, the park will take shape on the open-air amphitheater. It’s going to be Northern Europe’s biggest City Snow Park and will be open up to January 1st 2015. Atle Stehouwer, who is one of the people behind the project, says: “We’re working really hard to get a detailed program planned. So look forward to next week where we can present Aarhus Snow Park“
The slope will have a snow guarantee. Company Snowtek will make sure the piste will have snow all December. They also delivered snow-cannons to the Winter Olympics and we all know how well they delivered there, with subtropical temperatures down in the city. Their snow-cannons have the possibility to create snow up to 30 degrees Celcius, so it shouldn’t be a problem with the cold Nordic winters.
The “mountain” is 100 meters long and will include 4 different pistes, resulting in 400 meters of different “mountain” to ski on. It will also include a freestyle area with boxes, rails and kickers. The final decision of the setup will be made in the coming days.
The park will be open every day, where kids and youngsters from schools, institutions and educational places can come in for free from 10:00 to 15:00. The park is open from 10:00 to 22:00 every day and if you don’t have any gear, you can rent it there. Of course, skiing isn’t skiing without après-ski, so they are creating a “hyggelig” (Danish for cozy) après-ski area.
So, if you are a pro, beginner or total newby, it seems everyone will be able to enjoy some snow this winter in Aarhus!
