Whenever one searches pictures of our solar system, you have to dig deep to find a picture that depicts the solar system to scale. The problem lies in the really REALLY great distances between planets, which is why these guys have built the solar system to scale on a dry lakebed, spanning 11.26km from edge to edge.
The problem is, as they explain in the beginning of the video, that the distances are so huge that if you’d draw our solar system to scale on paper, the planets would be microscopic. Any picture you find online of the solar system is made so it’s more understandable for us puny humans, but in reality the distances are far greater than depicted in those images.
That is THE reason these guys went out to a dry lakebed in Nevada to build the solar system to scale. I think the twist in the end, with the size of the sun in their scale-system being the same as the real sun, is a nice and unexpected twist.
